First release of the year by a semi-well known girl group and we already seein some good shit. (Also, still have not figured out how to embed videos that you can't link from blogger's video search thing)
Song:
Dal Shabet are back with an 80s inspired song "Someone Like U". Now this group has been around for a while, believe it or not, but unfortunately haven't seen much success. First of all, I really like their name "Dal Shabet". I don't even know wtf it's supposed to mean, but it's got an interesting cadence to it that I love. They were formed by the producer E-Tribe who wrote the mega-hit Gee but hasn't able to create anything else of much value since to match up to it. Fortunately, for this comeback they chose to collaborate with Brave Brothers, who has definitely been on an upward trend throughout 2015 with hits like Heart Attack and So Crazy, so this song is definitely promising.
Now I'm not really sure if I can really call myself a fan of 80s music, but given my obsession with Infinite, whose discography is literally steeped with 80s, I guess I can say that I'm a fan of the kpop version of 80s music. Especially in this song, there were these great drums that I don't know the name of which played every now that I loved. Yet at the same time, I didn't like Wonder Girls' I Feel You very much, because I guess in that instance the 80s was a little too overt? I don't fucking know tbh.
Anyway, the chorus is extremely catchy "just like you baby, just like baby", and is probably the best part of the whole song. The verses are definitely weaker and even after listening to this song like 5 or 6 times I'm still not sure what they sound like. There's this interesting rap-sing sort of section in the middle that I don't really have an opinion on yet, though it's a nice break from the rest of the song (even though it feels a bit out of place).
At first glance, the lyrics seem to be saying that they want to find someone like the person they're addressing in the song. BUT, the closed captioning on the video actually reveals that they despise the person they like/are dating and want them to find someone just as terrible as them, which is hilarious to me. This subversion of my expectations definitely earns them some extra points in my book.
Rating: 6.5/10
Dance:
The dance is nothing special, typical girl group fare. Ya got your purposeful walking around, your sassy pointing, your sexy hip gyrations, etc. Mostly forgettable except maybe the pointing in the chorus.
Rating: 5.5/10
MV:
Again, nothing special. There's a semblance of a plot, which has a boyfriend or crush or something who happens to be shared by all four members (that is probably already gonna be an issue lol) that did something bad or whatever. I don't know. Lots of dance-in-a-box scenes interspersed throughout so I don't really know.
Rating: 5/10
Styling:
Pretty nice. The high waisted black leather tights things (??) are worn with nice contrast to their jackets which have some loud and interesting patterns. Their hair colors are all different, but thankfully no electric blue or lime green or some other crazy color (though we do see a pink ombre on the rapper girl, which actually turned out nicely). I'm very glad that kpop as a whole have moved on from the crazy ass hot trash they were wearing circa 2013. They're still very flashy, now at least it's toned down and more sophisticated. Like how I imagine myself in ten years.
Rating: 7.5/10
Overall:
One would expect that I just do an average of all of the categories and give that as my final score. Nah. I go off of my gut, which ends up as more of a weighted average, with the song quality as having the most weight, followed by the dance, the MV, and then least of all a styling.
Final Rating: 6.5/10
----> Please keep in mind that a 5 for me is dead average (no opinion either way), so in this case, a 6.5/10 is actually a good rating. I enjoyed the song, but it wasn't anything too special.
